Description
The Activities/Athletic Director is accountable to the Directing Principal of the school to which assigned. This position assumes the responsibilities of the Athletics/Activities for the school as well as supporting the development of programming in elementary (skills) and middle (team participation) for the assigned high school boundary feeder schools. (TBD). In addition, the position will be responsible for the direct oversight of Physical Education and Health courses (curriculum, evaluation, teacher EE, etc.) of the high school to which assigned. Overall, the Activities/Athletic Director will provide support and structural programming development K-12 that will enhance and advance the co-curricular opportunities for the children of Racine and Racine County.
Formal Education:
Master’s Degree from a school accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges or an equivalent agency.
Certification/Licenses: Must have or be eligible for Wisconsin certification as a principal. Educator Effectiveness Certified or must obtain certification within 60 days of hire date.
Experience:
- Leadership experience in successful Secondary Transformation.
- Minimum of five years teaching and/or administrative experience.
- Experience as a coach and/or Athletics/Activities Director
- Urban education experience
Fiscal Responsibilities:
Oversees athletic and activities budget(s) at both the high school and middle school levels.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Leading significant transformation initiatives in diverse and complex educational settings.
- Uphold high expectations for the development of student athletes, (K-12).
- Understands how to use multiple sources of data to inform daily decisions.
- Pursues and implements innovative ideas and methods (K-12)
- Is knowledgeable of operations, management and organizational design, and event management (including the scheduling of athletic events and tournaments, safety, and logistics.)
- Demonstrates an unyielding commitment to continuous improvement and an unwavering belief that all students can achieve at high levels.
- Strong management skills with the ability to motivate and develop a diverse group of coaches/teachers.
- Capability to effectively build, develop, and maintain strong collaborative relationships with administrators, staff, coaches, teachers, parents, students, board members, community stakeholders and business partners to ensure activities/athletic programming operates in the most effective manner possible to support student, family, community, and staff needs.
- Ability to self-direct and prioritize among competing goals, exhibit flexibility, and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
- Work collaboratively with the other Activities/Athletic Directors in an effort to build fiscally responsible, strong and sustainable district programming/opportunities for our students K - 12.
- Excellent written, verbal communication, listening, and presentation skills with keen attention to detail.
- Understanding of the WIAA rules and regulations, the Academy Model, and the National Standards of Practice (NSOP).
- Understanding of Ford Next Generation Learning (NGL) and its essential practices.
- Demonstrates a high level of moral imperative to work in the best interest of children.
- Demonstration of high levels of integrity, honesty, credibility, and courage to make difficult yet necessary decisions is a must.
Essential Functions
1. Overall purpose of the position of Activities/Athletic Director
- Understand the framework for activities/athletics as it relates to the rest of the comprehensive Academy environment.
- Lead and manage to enable all students the opportunity to recognize and achieve their potential.
- Provide the vision and leadership needed to realize the community, business and civic partnerships needed to transform standards.
- Be accountable for continuous improvement in the quality of education for children and young people of all abilities.
- Ensure quality of instruction available to students by conducting observations and teacher evaluations at the direction of the directing principal. (Physical Education and Health)
- Provide an avenue for students to enrich and experience leadership experiences through activities, athletics, community engagement opportunities, and service.
- Create the environment and manage resources to promote and secure the equal opportunities and achievement of all students.
- Provide quality student activities through the coordination of scheduling transportation, eligibility standards, officials and supervision.
- Assumes any additional responsibilities as assigned by the Directing Principal and/or Deputy Chief.
2. Leadership
- Develop and sustain high quality teaching and learning throughout the Physical Education and Health Departments. (high school only)
- Harness and nurture the talents and support of members of the school community and external partners to create an exciting and vibrant learning (participant/coaching) environment. (K-12)
- Provides staff (including coaches at all levels) development related to the initiatives of the RUSD’s Strategic Plan and the Academies of Racine.
- Attends regularly scheduled Data Team Meetings, PL’s, all other required as an administrator.
- Provides leadership as LEA Representative to ensure appropriate implementation of student IEP’s.
3. Academy Culture
- Develop (through the lens of activities/athletics) a very strong academic, emotional, social, and physically safe environment based on the Academy Team system.
- Ensure that staff leading the Academy Team understand the importance of their roles in encouraging and supporting co-curricular student participation.
- Participate in Academy meetings to support teacher and student development.
- Ensure that Academy Team activities encourage parental involvement in their child’s school life.
- Support parental involvement in the elementary and middle school through activities/athletics as well.
4. Curriculum
- Ensure that the curriculum is appropriate for all students and is supported by high quality teaching.
- Develop a curriculum which values the talents and aspirations of all students.
- Ensure that suitable strategies are implemented to raise standards continually.
- Set challenging targets to develop all students academically and socially.
- Maintain effective assessment and recording systems which track students’ progress and identify for them and their families what progress is being made each term.
- Monitor the curriculum and learning and teaching groups to safeguard best value with resource management.
5. Activities & Athletics
- Provide quality student activities through the coordination of scheduling transportation, eligibility standards, officials and supervision.
- Management of School’s website, Social Media and Marketing activities (Web Site, Twitter, etc.)
- Ensures, under the supervision of the Directing Principal, optimum use of school funds by developing and administrative an annual budget for all athletic and activities programs, initiating school purchase orders, accounting for ticket sales, maintaining an inventory and control system for all equipment and supplies used in the athletic/activity program and coordinating fundraising efforts.
- Ensure optimum use of any school facilities for which they have oversight by scheduling their use by both school and public groups, procuring and paying necessary workers and supervision and proper treatment of them by the user.
- Ensure quality and equity of the athletics/activities program by evaluating and supervising all student activity advisors, athletic coaches and secretarial staff, conducting National Federation, W.I.A.A. and athletic conference business, disciplining students for athletic code violations, maintaining public relations, developing and updating an activities guidebook and a system of athletic and school honors.
- Collaborate with all stakeholders to create Division I level student activities/athletic programs.
- May participate in the vacancy posting and selection process for the athletic coaches.
- Provide an avenue for students to enrich and experience leadership experiences.
- Coordination of school engagement activities including, but not limited to, assemblies, school dances, clubs, and activities.
- Coordinate with the assigned Wheaton Franciscan Sports Medicine trainer for all athletic training needs with athletes, coaches and parents.
- Assumes any additional responsibilities as assigned by the Directing Principal and/or Deputy Chief.
6. Personnel
- Create and maintain good working relationships among all members of the school community(ies).
- Lead in the recruitment and selection of teaching and support staff.
- Actively promote appropriate personal and professional development of all staff he/she oversees..
- Promote and implement strategies which secure good order, discipline and high morale throughout the school community.
- Lead the performance management of all staff he/she oversees.
- Ensure strong distributed leadership so that teams and individuals can be effective in their work with young people.
- Ensure quality of the athletics/activities program by evaluating and supervising all student activity advisors, athletic coaches and secretarial staff, conducting National Federation, W.I.A.A. and athletic conference business, disciplining students for athletic code violations, maintaining public relations, developing and updating an activities guidebook and a system of athletic and school honors.

7. Finance
- Seek to secure good resources for the school, its students and staff.
- Plan and manage assigned finances and resources to ensure maximum benefit for students.
- Provide advice to the Site and District Leadership Teams and Advisory Councils on the formulation of the annual and projected yearly budgets in order to secure programming objectives.
- Set appropriate priorities for expenditure and allocation of funds,
- Ensures, under the supervision of the Directing Principal, optimum use of school funds by developing and administrative an annual budget for all athletic and activities programs, initiating school purchase orders, accounting for ticket sales, maintaining an inventory and control system for all equipment and supplies used in the athletic/activity program and coordinating fundraising efforts.
8. Partners
- Work closely with the education, business, and non-profit sectors and the Site and District Leadership Teams and Advisory Councils to ensure that the development of all co-curricular opportunities are very successful.
- Develop and encourage very good relationships between the school and the local families it serves, utilizing the District’s Family and Community Engagement Office to do so.
- Promote strong links with the local community: education, business and non-profit sectors.
- Secure strong links with other key partners who are supporting the overall Academy’s development.
- Meets with parents regarding program celebrations, concerns or complaints.
9. Campus
- Be responsible for the Academy campus, its buildings, equipment and grounds as it pertains to his/her responsibilities..
- Manage and organize the campus efficiently to ensure it meets the needs of the students and staff
- Advise the Site and District Leadership Teams and Advisory Councils on premises requirements as the activities/athletics structure develops over the coming years.
- Be accountable for health and safety requirements.
- Ensure optimum use of school facilities by scheduling their use by both school and public groups, procuring and paying necessary workers and supervision and proper treatment of them by the user.
- Ensure a quality athletic/event by organizing and instituting a plan of supervision and crowd control for both school social functions and athletic activities.
Work Environment:
Busy office environment with multiple priorities and frequent interruptions. Travel to and work within other school environments (MS and ES feeder schools) is a requirement.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
- Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to thirty pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
- Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
- Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
- Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
- Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
- Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
- Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
